Thornton earns Stock Cars Summit Shootout win as Summit USRA Nationals get underway at Lucas Oil Speedway

WHEATLAND, MO. (Oct. 4, 2022) - Dylan Thornton made the long haul from California and started a long week at the 9th annual Summit USRA Nationals on the right foot Tuesday night.

Thornton led all 18 laps to grab the Stock Cars Summit Shootout on Night One of the five-night USRA extravaganza at Lucas Oil Speedway.

Thornton, of Santa Maria, California, opened a 1.9-second lead over fellow front-row starter Mitch Hovden when the race’s caution flew on lap four. Two laps later, seven cars spun in turns one and two to bring out another yellow, with Thornton in front of Hovden by 1.1 seconds.

Two more cautions slowed the action over the next four laps, with Bryan White moving into third behind Thornton and Hovden with eight laps remaining.

Action remained green the rest of the way and Thornton pulled away to prevail by 2.6 seconds over Hovden for his seventh feature victory of 2022. Todd Staley was third with Myles Michehl fourth and Kevin Donlan fifth.

"I knew it was gonna be a tough race, this Shootout race with pretty much all the fast guys in one race for 18 laps," Thornton said. "When you have a yellow every two laps on a track as tricky as this one, that can change so fast, it gets tough.

"It's great to start the week off like this."

The Summit Shootouts are for USRA track champions and Summit Shootout qualifying race winners this season and were held in two divisions on Tuesday, the Stock Cars and the Hobby Stocks.

Hobby Stocks Summit Shootout to Clinton: Dylan Clinton took over the lead with a turn-four pass on lap 10 and went on to win the Hobby Stocks Summit Shootout.

Clinton, of West Union, Iowa, started sixth and made his way through the field before taking the lead from Dustin Gulbrandson for the lead. Clinton led the rest of the way and beat Carter Koop by .612 seconds for the win.

"I just realized that I needed to slow down quite a bit there," Clinton said of the key over the last few laps. "The track was a lot slicker than I thought. It worked out good."

Steve Larson wound up third with Gulbrandson fourth and Scott Dobel fifth.

Wolff dominant in Modifieds on Night One: Tyler Wolff started up front of the 18-lap USRA Modified feature and checked out after a pair of early cautions to win going away. Wolff beat Ryan Middaugh by 3.89 seconds with national USRA points leader Tyler Davis finishing in third.

Bot the Modified and B-Mod feature results on Tuesday count toward USRA national points, but do not affect qualifying position for the USRA Nationals feature on Saturday. Everyone ran two rounds of heat races earlier in those classes on Tuesday to earn points toward this week’s finale.

Wolff, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, exhibited early strength in the Modified division by winning both of his heat races in addition to the A Feature.

“I got a new car from MB Customs last week and put a motor and transmission in this thing and been grinding tires," Wolff said. "That's a lot of fun when you're not having to work on it. Those guys at the shop did an awesome job."

Wolff said once he opened the big lead, he simply tried to keep his focus.

"I was really focused on the cars in front of me, trying not to make a mistake," Wolff said. "If I could just keep going what I was doing I could probably finish it out with a win."

Brandon Givens finished fourth and two-time Lucas Oil Speedway champion Dillon McCowan, who came into the week second in national points, was fifth.

Sheets takes B Mod thriller: Jon Sheets beat Kris Jackson by .296 seconds as both came from deep in the field in the B-Mod feature. The race was for national points, but not for points toward the starting field for Saturday’s B-Mod main event.

Sheets, of Nevada, edged out his J2 Race Cars teammate in an 18-lapper that came down to the final turn.

Jackson, a seven-time Lucas Oil Speedway track champion, started eighth and worked his way into third by lap eight and to second, behind Shadren Turner, a lap later. Meanwhile, 10th-starting Sheets shot his way into third by the mid point.

Sheets sailed around both Turner and Jackson on the outside of turn two and into the lead on lap 12. It was a battle between Sheets and Jackson the rest of the way with Jackson working the low side and Sheets the outside groove. Jackson threw a slide job on the leader into turn three on the final lap, but Sheets was able to crossover and clear to take the win.

“I knew he was there and I knew I couldn't afford a mistake," Sheets said of Jackson. "I lost a race just like that in Texas a couple of weeks ago and dang sure didn't want to do it twice.

"That got our momentum going for sure," Sheets said of the win. He added that Jackson, who works with his cousin Tony Jackson Jr. on building the J2 cars, gave him some tips right before the feature.

"I was down there talking with Kris right before the A main and he gave me a couple of pointers that worked pretty good," Sheets said. "I have to thank everybody that helps me. This one is pretty special."

Turner finished in third with Joe Chisholm fourth and Tyler Kidwell fifth.
